The Asian Invasion
Two Asian mantis species, Hierodula tenuidentata and Hierodula patellifera, have been officially classified as Invasive Alien Species (IAS) in a new study published in the Journal of Orthoptera Research. Led by Roberto Battiston, this research sheds light on a growing ecological concern that had previously received little scientific attention.
These mantises have been in Europe for about a decade, but their populations have surged in recent years, spreading across Mediterranean and continental regions. Battiston attributes this expansion to climate change, allowing these insects to push further north and establish populations in parks and gardens, often unnoticed due to their impressive size and appearance.
Rapid Reproduction and Ecological Impact
Both Hierodula species are large, adaptable predators that thrive in trees and shrubs. Their reproductive prowess is remarkable, with each egg case producing an average of 200 young, nearly twice as many as their native European counterpart, Mantis religiosa. This, coupled with a lower rate of cannibalism among nymphs, enables their populations to grow rapidly.
The ecological implications are severe. Invasive female mantises attract native males, leading to attempted mating and subsequent consumption, thus reducing local native populations. Additionally, they feed on a diverse range of native animals, including vital pollinators like honeybees and protected small vertebrates such as tree frogs and lizards. This raises concerns, especially for Mediterranean islands, where unique invertebrate and vertebrate species are at risk.
Unlikely Allies and Urban Advantages
Surprisingly, domestic cats have emerged as the leading vertebrate predator of these invasive mantises, accounting for 45% of recorded predation events. While cats can help control mantis numbers, they cannot differentiate between invasive and native species, potentially impacting the declining European mantis populations already under pressure from competition.
Human development also plays a role in the mantises' success. Urban and suburban landscapes provide ideal habitats, with structures like insect hotels serving as productive hunting grounds. Additionally, urban heat islands extend the insects' activity into colder seasons, expanding their range and survival.
Citizen Science to the Rescue
To combat the spread of these invasive mantises, researchers are turning to citizen science. William di Pietro and Antonio Fasano (GRIO) have successfully engaged enthusiasts and citizens, collecting over 2,300 reports. This approach not only aids monitoring but also raises awareness and informs the public actively and participatively about these issues.
During winter, when trees are bare, the brown, spongy egg cases of these mantises, known as oothecae, become visible on branches. While these egg cases can be removed without causing pain, Battiston emphasizes the need for specialist consultation to avoid inadvertently removing native mantis eggs.
